A Grade 12 Student from Leyte Won a Tremendous Amount of 20 Million Pesos In a Science Competition

A grade 12 student participated and became a millionaire winning a science competition. She wanted to contradict views of many people about misbelief on students which is mostly deficient in physics.


A student in Philippine Science High School - Eastern Visayas Campus currently in Grade 12, a resident in Leyte have won a tremendous amount of $400, 000 after she became a contestant of an international competition named "Breakthrough Junior Challenge".


As stated by ABS-CBN News, the lucky girl was an 18-year-old Grade 12 student named Hillary Diane Andales. Based on the report, her goal is to demonstrate and let people see that most of them have a mistaken belief that students have a low standard when it comes to physics.

She also explained a portion of physics on it's most straightforward idea and said "We think na 'yung physics is all about equations. No, physics is about everything, and it matters to everyone."

Appeared 11, 000 competitors joined from 178 different countries worldwide. And luckily, her participation made her won a prize amounting to $400, 000 or 20 Million in Philippine peso.


It mentioned in the report, that a part of her prize will be used in purchasing materials and apparatus for their school laboratory, which would be all designated under her name amounting to $100,000. At the same time, $50,000 would be given to her teachers and the remaining $250,000 will be intended for her college and also for her future scholarship.

Andales confessed that she went to rough times along the way before she reached success. In her first competition, she, unfortunately, did not win the competition and, rated Top 6 on her entry last year. She continues her courage and use her experiences and be motivated again to participate in another contest. Andales is also looking forward that the government will have continuous support regarding science.

As cited, Andales is also a candidate for valedictorian. She wants to be an instrument and give inspiration to students and boost their confidence to join related to physics.

Based on her statement, she looks forward and wants to make a science-related tv program like ABS-CBN's "Sineskwela."
